Light to dark brown spiders with a distinctive dark violin-shaped marking on the top of the head area and six eyes (most spiders have eight). They favor dark, undisturbed spaces like closets, boxes, and basements, and their bite can cause a serious wound requiring medical attention.

- Identify the species — note if it's a medically significant one (like a black widow or brown recluse) and treat those with extra caution.
- Knock down and remove webs on sight, indoors and out; spiders won't stay where they can't rebuild.
- Reduce the insects they're feeding on — fewer prey means fewer spiders sticking around.
- Apply a residual concentrated insecticide along baseboards, window and door frames, under furniture, and in closets or storage areas.
- Treat the exterior foundation (about a foot up the wall and a foot out onto the ground) plus any utility entry points.
- Place sticky traps in corners, closets, and under appliances to monitor activity over time.
Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, closed-toe shoes with socks, chemical-resistant gloves, and goggles. Add a respirator if the label calls for it or ventilation is poor.
