Part 1: The one rule that outranks every product

Standing water is the factory. A bottle cap of water can breed mosquitoes; a clogged gutter can breed thousands. No spray program outruns a breeding site on your own property.

Weekly walk-through: plant saucers, buckets, toys, tarps, kiddie pools, birdbaths (dump twice weekly), clogged gutters, corrugated downspout extensions (the hidden #1), trash can lids, boat covers, tire ruts. Asian tiger and yellow fever mosquitoes are container breeders living within ~150 yards of where they hatched — YOUR yard's containers are usually YOUR bites.

Part 2: The barrier protocol

1. Essentria barrier spray on the places mosquitoes rest during the day: underside of leaves in shrubs and dense vegetation, under decks, shaded fence lines, around porches. Reapply per label through the season (botanical actives are shorter-lived but people/pet/pollinator friendlier).
2. Demand CS on shaded structural resting surfaces — under eaves, porch ceilings, wall shade lines — for longer residual on the house itself.
3. Spray timing: early morning or dusk, when pollinators are least active, and NEVER on blooming plants — protecting bees is both the law (label) and the brand.
4. Moving air is free control: a box fan on the patio outperforms most gadgets; mosquitoes are weak fliers.
5. Skip the gimmicks: bug zappers kill beneficial insects and few mosquitoes; citronella candles cover inches, not yards; ultrasonic repellers do nothing at all.

Part 3: What the seasonal rhythm looks like

• Spring: dump/fix breeding sites before the first warm week; first barrier application when evening temps hold above ~60°F.
• Summer: barrier reapplication per label; water patrol weekly; re-treat after heavy rains.
• Fall: keep gutters clear; final treatment as activity fades.

• Label is the law — rates, re-entry, and pollinator protections.
• Keep spray off blooming plants, vegetable gardens (unless the label explicitly allows), ponds, and water features.
• Personal protection still matters in peak season: EPA-registered repellent on people, especially dusk/dawn.

Part 6: When Buggsy says call a pro

• Pressure that survives a month of water patrol + barrier program — the breeding site may be off-property (retention ponds, neglected pools) where a pro or the county mosquito board has options you don't.
• Large properties or event-driven needs (weddings, gatherings) where professional misting programs earn their fee.
• Any suspicion of unusual disease risk in your area — follow county health advisories.
